An energy expenditure ratio, often used as a physical health indicator.
PAL is calculated by dividing total energy expenditure by basal metabolic rate.
It is broadly used to estimate a person’s lifestyle:
- PAL < 1.40: inactive lifestyle
- 1.40 ≤ PAL < 1.70: sedentary lifestyle
- 1.70 ≤ PAL < 2.00: active lifestyle
- 2.00 ≤ PAL < 2.40: vigorous lifestyle
- PAL ≥ 2.40: extremely active lifestyle
