Those dietary fibers that are able to dissolve in water in the gut.
Examples for soluble fibers and:
- viscous fibers: psyllium, beta-glucans, or pectins
- non-viscous fibers: inulin
- fermentable fibers: beta-glucans, pectins, inulin, or unavailable oligosaccharides
- non-fermentable fibers: psyllium
It should be noted that most soluble fibers are both viscous fibers and fermentable fibers, but this distinction is gradually replaced by the latter, which are more precise.
As opposed to insoluble fibers.
