A steroid hormone secreted mainly by the gonads (testicles in males and ovaries in females, to a lesser extent) and in smaller quantities by the adrenal glands and some other tissues.
As the main androgen, it is necessary for the proper development of male sexuality.
It plays an important role in muscle development, bone growth, the development of secondary sexual characteristics and the maintenance of libido in both men and women.
It is also the precursor of all estrogens.
